Why is my beard turning white ahead of my hair?

Although I have very few white hairs on top of my head, about 10 years ago my beard started turning white, and is now more than 50% white. I am surprised that my beard, which grows much more vigorously than my hair (which had been thinning also for almost a decade) would the one to turn white first. Can anyone venture an explanation for this strange phenomenon? Thanks
