Please, name this book?

Back in elementary school my class was read a book about a boy who meets a talking cat who tells him of a magical island. The boy gets there by hiding in a sack on cargo ship, and is subsequently dropped off there. That's all I remember from it. I think that its part of a trilogy, but I'm not sure.
